So, I got struck upside the head with a great idea for a level that might be a little unusual for a Sonic game -- a water stage based in a southwestern desert. It sounds a little odd at first, but the idea was mostly based off of Mono Lake in California, which is just surreal enough to fit in as a Sonic level. Desert backed up against snowy mountains, with a super smooth lake, and surreal rock formations? Sign me up! Dust Hill/Quartz Quadrant + Water! It's like Woofle heaven. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Mono_Lake_South_Tufa_Area_%282013%29_01.JPG One last image. WAY too big to fit on this thread though. xD Anyway, the idea I have for the present is now uploaded into the Drown Desert folder in our collaboration area. It's actually a tune I wrote a long time ago, but never found a place for in my project. I thought it could fit nicely in here, and give us something unique to work with, outside of Sonic's normal level tropes. I uploaded it as an OGG like a dummie, but I can fix that! xD The song came out very Nilsen -- moreso than I intended. No matter how much I tried to sprinkle Ogata and Hataya on it, it's still rather Nilsen. Not that that is a bad thing , of course! It also sounds so serious that I think it might be one of the later levels or something, if we even worry about dictating a level order.

I literally giggled with glee when I saw the pictures and read your suggestion here. It's a great idea, and the past music will be a challenge. That's not a bad thing, though. I like that chilled out moody style. And yes, I thought it sounded like Spencer Nilson before I read your confirmation of that. I'm already thinking of combining samples from Tidal Tempest, Quartz Quadrant, and even a little Collision Chaos. Feel free to provide any samples you would like me to "Ricoh-ize" to use for this Past arrangement. I gotta go to work, but I'll have more later. Beautiful place by the way! Would love to visit Mono Lake, some day.

Also, ogg files play just fine on my smart phone. Since its a song already finished, it works good. For a file that I want to add to, then WAV is preferred.

I've been listening to this throughout the day and have been visualizing how it would sound with Past PCM. It's really deep and atmospheric. I was thinking we should change the name to Diluvian Desert. It basically means something is submerged in a lot of water, and I think the name has more mystique like your song here. What say you then?
Oh yeah, a little Tidal Tempest past style will sound great with this. There's an echoey snare in that sample set that's just perfect!

I couldn't think of any to suggest, other than maybe that loveable bass from Quartz Quadrant, perhaps, although that's likely already on your list, considering the levels you mentioned! I'm actually really really excited about this, and what you're going to come up with for the past! Let me know if you need the MIDI data , or anything else from my present, or anything like that!

Cool! And yes I was initially planning on using some QQZ bass, but as an addition to the Tidal Tempest's predominent bassline. QQZ bassline would be sprinkled in here and there to act almost like a fretless guitar, in a sense. I'm gonna see if the Ricoh can do hardware pitch bending of samples at some point. If you go too crazy with special effects, the Sega CD starts to slow waaaaay down, though, apparently. Treadmill strings would kill Sonic's groove! No MIDI needed at the moment, but thank you for the offer. The tune is something I could probably adapt fairly easily, but the style and movements will be the difficult part for me. Tootles!

The tremolo effect would slow things down, but prerecorded treadmill strings are fine. :-D

By the way, diluvian IS a cool word indeed! When you study theology, you learn lots of cool words like that. The time before Noah's great flood is called the anti-diluvian period... before the Earth was submerged in water. I am not a theologian, but I have read and studied a lot of scripture and history. My little brother's a major history buff, though. That's his music. ;-) I want to see that new Noah movie coming out. It looks interesting.
Also, multiple sources say there is a Sonic movie in the works spearheaded by Columbian Pictures. There is talk that it will be in a Batman Dark Knight style, which is a little hard for me to visualize, though. :-\ As long as Tails is in it, I will be happy.

Oh wow, the past version is going to be off the chain!!! I was thinking, in terms of the style/movements being difficult to adapt over, if it's too difficult, taking things in a different direction could also work, too! Whatever ends up working!
We'll now have to make all future level names this awesome. XD I love the sound of it. It's really cool to have a history buff around, too! The things you can learn about the world, and how we got where we are today, are fascinating, you know? It's awesome that he has a passion for that, like you do, music, too.
O-oh dear... Sonic in Dark Knight style? I'm not sure how I feel about this... If it has tails in it, yeah, I'll be happy with it, too! XD Gosh, that could be strange, though...

I have not seen Dark Night, but I heard it's pretty gruesome and sadistic in nature... not my cup of tea. Sonic already has his own style and doesn't need any help from Batman, thank you very much. Hopefully that is just wishful thinking from a Sonic fan, or an over exaggerated statement from the producers.
I have another idea for a zone. It's called Pastel Pastures, and I'm working on a fake past tune using Pixitracker on my phone. I'll post a separate thread for that when I have it ready.
Oooh! I just had another idea, Galactic Grove. Green Hills meets Stardust Speedway. Things could get very interesting here. :-P

XD I'm really not able to imagine how in the heck a Batman-style Sonic would work. Remember when Sonic just ran around, and didn't talk (much) and blew up robots? Can we go back to that? XD Also, these both need to be stages, stat!!! I like the names already! So far, I think we've got more creative tropes than most of the last decade of Sonic games. XD

XD Well it's settled then. And I had an idea for another one. Since you said the original round 2 was some kind of ruins stage, let's do something called Radical Ruins. I know you attempted to reimagine it, and I like what you made. But I think it'd be cool to do a reboot which would involve coming up with original Past music. It would push our creativity because I want to come up with my own 8 bit PCM 64KB sample set. Something that would work on the actual game! Every sample set for each past arrangement was unique. So I figured round 2 should be no different. You could certainly give me MIDI tunes for melody ideas, and of you find any cool samples you want to Ricoh-ize for the final product. I'll be on the look out as well. What do you say? Sent from my Prism II using Tapatalk

I like what you have so far, and it's a really really interesting chord you've got going here. I very much approve of where this is going. It's every bit as trippy and nifty as Tidal Tempest past. !!! Also, yes! Radical Ruins would be awesome! I also approve of doing something new for that level. Heck, we don't even need to reuse any parts of that tune I scribbled at (especially since I jettisoned the whole thing into my personal project anyway, xD) We can do something new, if you'd like. Somethin' fresh and creative! All up to you! That one sounds like it's going to be a really fun level to do musical stuff for!

Also, I changed the "General" board to Sonic CD 2 board containing all our zones we've posted. This will allow for us or other people to post boards for different music projects, while keeping things organized.

I'm really enjoying this zone idea, and it just seems to fit so nicely with this project overall. I look forward to finishing up the past mix, and then the Bad Future mix. I have a good creepy Spencer Nilsen idea for that in my head, ala Tidal Tempest.

He's quite good, and has the Sonic concept as well.

That is going to be fantastic. OK, I've listened to your G Mix a little more. The only suggestions I have is that the muted trumpet be toned down just a little. It's kind of loud, but I think it should stay, at least in the background. And, see if it would sound good to add some accordion stuff like in the Jap Quartz Quadrant Good Future. Also, make a weird 8 bit, 16Khz interlude that splits the track in 2, acting as a looping point. If your unsure what I mean, check out this YouTube clip: Sonic CD Looping Music - Wacky Workbench: This was how Sonic CD tracks were on the 720 beta version, and also the Android versions. The PCM chip played a tie in sample while the CD audio track reset to the start. This would allow you to keep your song at 4 minutes with intended authenticity!
